How Ants Enter Your Home

Ants prefer outdoor living, but they may still find their way into your home. Their enhanced sense of smell draws them to food sources, even from a distance. Once they find their way inside, they can be annoying and problematic.

They contaminate human and pet food, and they sometimes leave bacteria behind. Ants may also cause damage to already deteriorating wooden structures. When you discover them in your home, locating and eliminating the infestation is usually more challenging than you might expect.

  • Access Points: The conducive conditions that provide access may include cracks, crevices, deteriorating wood, foundation cracks, windows, branches, and other entryways you might never have considered.
  • Moisture: Moisture-laden wood provides the perfect conditions for ants to nest. They typically establish homes in rotting tree stumps, piles of firewood, and wooden outdoor structures. They may also enter your home due to storm damage, or wooden features deteriorating due to water leaks.
  • Food: An ant’s highly-developed olfactory system allows them to smell food from a distance. Sugary and protein-rich foods attract foragers. They follow the scent through an opening into your home, leaving a pheromone trail for other ants to detect and follow.

Inspection

We consider your observations as we search for the infestation. The ants in your home may come from adjacent exterior wooden structures or an outdoor nest yards away. We locate them by following ant trails, identifying access points, and pinpointing high-activity areas.

Treatment

Once we locate the nest, we personalize an ant extermination system for your approval. Our strategy considers the ant species, infestation severity, and areas involved.

  • Access points: We identify points of entry and recommend steps to eliminate access.
  • Low-hazard pesticides: We use baits and low-level pesticides with minimal risk to families and pets. Baits work gradually, allowing ants to track pesticides back to their nest.
  • Food Sources: We locate food sources that attract ants. These may include garbage cans, open food containers, crumbs on counters and floors, and sweet liquids.
  • Follow-Up We recommend periodic inspections to ensure the treatment is working. We look for signs of new ant activity, and assess the need for additional treatment.
  • Prevention: We help you understand how and why ants enter your home. We teach you how to eliminate conducive conditions and prevent future termite infestations.
