How Termites Enter Your Home
Termites live primarily underground and in wooded areas. When you spot one in or near your Connecticut home, it will most likely be an Eastern Subterranean Termite (Reticulitermes flavipes.) They’re the most common termite species in the state. They relocate to your exterior and interior space for several reasons.
- Access Points: Termites tunnel into homes through organic or wooden features like porches, decks, climbing plants, mulch, and also polystyrene insulation.
- Moisture: Their colonies must have moisture to survive. Downspouts and sprinkler systems can provide the moisture they need.
- Food: Wood cellulose is their primary food source. They gravitate to wood near your home, such as firewood, outside structures, and mulch.
Residential Termite Management
Inspection
- Mud Tubes: Subterranean termites use mud tubes to travel from the soil into your home.
- Swarming termites: Winged termites indicate a nearby colony. Some homeowners identify them as “winged ants.”
- Shed wings: If you see detached termite wings near windows or doors, they can be a sign of termite activity.
- Hollow sounding wood: When we tap on wood and it has a hollow sound, that often indicates that termites have eaten away the interior.
- Moisture Content: Sometimes a home’s high moisture content attracts termites. They need moisture to survive.
Treatment
If we confirm an infestation, we develop a treatment strategy to address your infestation. We consider the termite species, infestation severity, and the areas affected inside and outside of your property.
Based on our experience in exterminating termites, we rely on these two products for their effectiveness in resolving residential termite infestations.
Termidor© HE: High Efficiency Termiticide
When our operators apply Termidor© HE liquid, homeowners can expect termite colony elimination within 120 days.
- Liquid termiticide: We apply it in treatment zones outside your home, creating a protective barrier against termites.
- Non-repellent: It’s undetectable to termites so they don’t realize they’re contacting or ingesting it.
- Delayed action: When termites come into contact with the application, they transport it to their colony and eventually eliminate it.
- Long-lasting protection: Termidor© HE protects homes against termites for up to to 10 years.
ATBS: Annual Termite Bait System
- Installation: We install baits around your home’s perimeter. They’re in the ground but visible, assuring you that they’re monitoring for termites or managing a detected infestation.
- Monitoring and baiting: We check each bait periodically, looking for signs of termites. If we detect a termite presence, we add a slow-acting insecticide to initiate the extermination process.
- Colony elimination: Termites feed on the bait and carry it back to their nest, eventually eliminating the colony. Baits provide visible long-term monitoring and extermination.
- Environmentally friendly: Baits contain low amounts of insecticide. They produce the results you need, but minimize human and pet exposures.
Follow-Up
After we treat a termite infestation, we recommend regular follow-up inspections. This helps us monitor treatment effectiveness, identify signs of subsequent infestation, and consider additional treatment options.
Prevention
Prevention is a key facet of any termite extermination strategy. We teach homeowners to participate in minimizing the risk of future infestations. We share information about conducive conditions and structural deficiencies that encourage termite invasions. We also recommend regular termite inspections.
Regular Inspections Are Critical to Successful Termite Extermination
- Connecticut General Statutes require that a seller complete a Residential Condition Report. This informs potential buyers of any adverse conditions, such as termites and other pests.
- An unexpected infestation may compel you to obtain services from a company you would have otherwise avoided.
- Termites may motivate you to reduce your selling price or remove your home from the market.
- As a buyer, a termite infestation may force you to reassess your commitment to buy a home.
